Chapter Nineteen

~Golem~

The flickering flames swayed all around the cavernous hall in which the Golem knelt. Before him, one of his masters stood as still as a robed statue.

After Fisher Creek had almost been lost, he had expected the Order to demand his presence, no doubt eager for answers and a report of what he had witnessed. He still couldn’t believe how close they had come to ruination.

The forces of darkness clearly had more hold over the mortal world than the Order accepted, a thought that concerned the Golem. If a force of such power could gain a foothold amongst the mortals, then the Prince would be the least of their concern.

They still had time to wait before the Chrysalis was ready to fulfil her destiny. Her power and strength were still maturing. While they waited, they were vulnerable.

“It is clear the girl is the Chrysalis. This we now accept,” the robed figure said, finally breaking the silence. “We are gathering our forces and converging on Fisher Creek in anticipation of the looming awakening.”

The Golem smiled triumphantly, keeping his face turned to the ground to avoid notice. He had been right all along, his instincts leading him in the right direction. Finally, the Order was taking action.

“For now, however, we cannot reveal ourselves to her.”

The Golem nodded. It still frustrated him that she was forced to fight blind, but he was growing to understand the reasons the more he learned about her.

“I understand,” the Golem answered. “What would you have me do?”

There was a long pause before the robed figure replied.

“We have an issue,” he said. “One of our own has gone rogue, betraying us for reasons we cannot ascertain.”

The Golem looked up, confusion clear on his face. If one of the Order had betrayed them, then his masters were right to be concerned. They acted in secrecy, no single one knowing the identities of the others in the field when conducting such a mission as theirs, but if someone had betrayed the Order, then things would prove more difficult.

“Who?” he demanded.

The Golem’s master seemed to hesitate. The Golem froze, sensing a great deal of fear within the robed figure before him.

“Who?” he asked again.

“Your teacher,” the robed man said. “Jarred has left us. He is here in Fisher Creek.”

The Golem shuddered, fear threatening to overwhelm him for the first time in years. If his teacher had betrayed them, he wasn’t sure what good he would be. Jarred was powerful, stronger than all other creations of the Order.

His teacher was unique, possessing abilities no other Golem could wield. He instructed his students through a series of mind tricks and nightmares, bringing to life a person’s deepest and darkest fears. If he had truly turned his back on them, they had a real challenge on their hands.

“Do you know what he plans?” the Golem asked.

“Yes, he intends to take the life of the Chrysalis and stop her destiny from ever coming to pass,” his master said. “He intends to destroy everything we have worked for.
